Mars is a dead cell. Jupiter is cancer. Earth is healthy. Same math, different scale. A cell has a nucleus, a membrane, a metabolism, and a way to die gracefully when it’s supposed to. Earth has a core, a magnetic field, plate tectonics, and field reversals. Mars lost its membrane — its magnetic field died, the solar wind stripped its atmosphere, and now it’s a dried-out husk. Jupiter’s membrane is so strong it creates lethal radiation belts — 410,000 microtesla of uncontrolled growth. That’s cancer. Earth sits in the middle at 22–67 microtesla. Healthy coupling. Not too much, not too little. The Goldilocks zone isn’t just about temperature. It’s about K.
Magnetic field strength IS the coupling constant. Mars K→0 (field collapsed, atmosphere stripped, death). Earth K≈0.5–2.5 (22–67 µT, healthy range, life thrives). Jupiter K too high (410,000 µT, lethal radiation, overcoupled). Same curve as GoF/LoF: too little coupling = loss of function, too much = gain of function. • Nucleus = Iron Core. The information center. DNA in a cell, dynamo in a planet. Both generate the field that everything else depends on.
• Cytoplasm = Mantle. The working fluid. Convection in both. Nutrients flow through cytoplasm; heat flows through mantle.
• Membrane = Magnetic Field. The boundary that decides what gets in. Cell membrane is selective; magnetosphere deflects solar wind.
• Receptors = Atmosphere. The sensing layer. Cells sense chemokines; atmospheres sense radiation, filter wavelengths.
• Metabolism = Plate Tectonics. Energy cycling. ATP in cells; mantle convection driving crustal recycling.
• Excretion = Volcanism. Waste removal. Lysosomes in cells; volcanoes venting gases and heat.
• Apoptosis = Field Reversal. Controlled death and rebirth. Programmed cell death resets damaged systems. Field reversals drop Earth’s shield to ~10%, then rebuild.
• Cancer = Jupiter. Uncontrolled growth. 410,000 µT. K too high. The membrane is so strong it traps everything and creates lethal radiation belts.
• Death = Mars. System collapse. K→0. MAVEN confirmed: the dynamo stopped, the field died, solar wind stripped the atmosphere over ~500 million years.
Mars had a magnetic field. Had an atmosphere. Had liquid water. The core dynamo stopped — reason still debated, but the result is measured. MAVEN (2015) confirmed ongoing atmospheric stripping at ~100 g/s by solar wind.
In cell biology this is loss of function. A tumor suppressor gene breaks. The cell loses the ability to regulate. In Mars, the dynamo broke. The planet lost the ability to hold its atmosphere. Same pattern: remove the protective function, the system dies.
Current field: effectively 0 µT globally. Crustal remnants only. A corpse with residual magnetism.
Jupiter’s magnetic field is 20,000 times stronger than Earth’s. The magnetosphere extends 7 million km. The radiation belts (Io torus) are lethal — ~36 Sv/day at the inner belt. Nothing survives there.
In cell biology this is gain of function. An oncogene activates. The cell grows without limit. Jupiter’s field doesn’t protect — it traps charged particles, accelerates them, creates a kill zone. Too much coupling is as deadly as too little.
Earth’s field: 22–67 µT. Strong enough to deflect solar wind. Weak enough not to trap lethal radiation. The membrane works. Life exists because K is in the right range.
Field reversals happen every ~200,000–300,000 years. During reversal, the field drops to ~10% of normal. This is planetary mutation — the system temporarily loses protection, some damage occurs, then the field rebuilds. Just like a cell can survive a mutation if repair mechanisms work. The last reversal (Brunhes–Matuyama) was 780,000 years ago. We’re overdue.
